Classes at the Community Film Workshop of Chicago are taught in small groups, usually less than 8 students per class, to give each student the personalised attention they may need from their instructor. All of our instructors have experience in real world settings giving each student the advantage of learning from someone "in the business". Classes fill up quickly. We recommend you register and pay for classes at least one week in advance in order to reserve a space. You must be a current CFWC member before enrolling. If you are not a current member please submit your completed membership application with payment at time of class registration. Classes we offer include:
This class is for beginning media producers or those with minimal or no video production experience. This class will provide you with the basic skills and knowledge to create your first production. Participants will learn about all stages of video production (pre-production, production and post production); the digital video formats; basic camera operation; lighting; and audio techniques. Using mini DV cameras participants will shoot one short project. Limited to eight (6) students.

Utilizing Adobe Premiere students in this introductory class in video editing will learn concepts such as: digitizing footage cutting; audio tweaking; transitions; adding text or titles; and exporting your finished product back to tape. Students are encouraged to bring in their own footage (Mini DV format) for editing. Limited to five (5) students.

This class is for intermediate media makers who want to bring a higher technical level to their productions. Using DVCPRO cameras to explore: color bars; filters; timecode; lens versatility; and zoom, iris and shutter controls. Advanced lighting techniques for digital cameras will also be a focus of this course. Audio recording techniques covered will include; field recording; microphones and mixers. Upon completion of the class, students will be certified for camera rental. Prerequisites for the course : Beginning Digital Video Production or permission of the instructor. Six sessions. Limited to eight (8) students.
Cost: $470/Members
An introduction to CFWC's Avid Express editing system. The class will include: an introduction to the system's main functions; concepts of non-linear editing; digitizing and organizing source materials; editing; and output. Participants are encouraged to bring five minutes of their own video material on DVCPRO or Mini DV format (s) for class use. Basic knowledge of the Macintosh and video editing experience required. A final project will consist of a short piece ready to transfer to
videotape. Five (5) session. Limited to four students (4).
Cost: $470/Members
This class will cover the basics of non-linear editing with Final Cut Pro 3 including: transitions; capturing media; adding effects; and cutting audio. There will be minimal hands-on time during class and students are encouraged to bring footage in the mini DV format. The course fee includes 6 hours of independent lab time. Prerequisites: Prior digital editing and basic Mac literacy. Limited to four (4) students.

Community Film Workshop of Chicago (CFWC) and Kennedy King College (KKC) have joined in a partnership to effectively serve the needs of the community and students at the college through new media and special interest classes. Both institutions are beacons of hope for many emerging media artists and broadcast students. CFWC and KKC are bridging the critical gap for those seeking to produce independent media and work in the industry. Through the residency CFWC is expanding the community in Community Film Workshop.
Community Film Workshop and Kennedy King College co-sponsor seminars that expose KKC students and prospective students to new careers and expanded employment opportunities. These seminars are designed to increase the participation of under represented groups in the media industry. The seminars also serve as an introduction to media literacy, film criticism and future courses designed by Community Film Workshop.
WFilm related jobs are presented in an uncomplicated manner by working professionals in a specific craft. The Instructors' knowledge about the media industry and/or future employment in the business will impact the decisions participants make regarding career choices. Topics include: Camera Operator Assistant Director Makeup and Hair Gaffer Sound Design Location Scout.
