INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITING

This in-person workshop introduces the fundamentals of screenwriting—finding your voice, shaping strong stories, and getting your ideas onto the page with clarity and confidence. The course breaks down the screenwriting process in a clear, approachable way, making it ideal for beginners as well as writers looking to strengthen their foundation.

  • During this workshop, students will:

  • Understand story structure, including the three-act model

  • Break down and analyze films and screenplays

  • Overcome writer’s block and creative resistance

  • Develop and write an original short screenplay

  • Give and receive constructive feedback

 

Introduction to Screenwriting meets in person on Saturdays 10 AM - 2 PM.

The cost of this hands-on course is $450.

Saturday, January 17 – Topic: How are compelling stories created?

  • Free write (10 min) – Warm-up

  • Film: TBD

  • Discussion: Breakdown of hero’s journey and three-act structure.

 

Saturday, January 24 – Topic: How are rich characters developed?

  • Free write (10 min) – Warm-up

  • Film: Shorts Showcase TBD

  • Discussion: Analyze the characters’ motivations, journey, and arc.

  • Free write (20 min) – Brainstorm story ideas.

 

Saturday, January 31 – Topic: Develop story ideas.

  • Free write (10 min) – Warm-up/continue brainstorming story ideas.

  • Film: Shorts Showcase TBD

  • Free write: Rough draft of short screenplay (30 min)

  • Discussion: Questions/Progress

 

Saturday, February 7 – Topic: Structure/outline story ideas.

  • Free write (10 min) – Warm-up

  • Copyright, WGA registration, and screenplay software options.

  • Free write (30-45 min) – Apply hero’s journey to organize rough draft.

  • Discussion: Film clips TBD

 

Saturday, February 14 – Topic: How to give (and receive) peer screenplay notes productively.

  • Free write (10 min) – Warm-up

  • Screenplays due.

  • Film: TBD

  • Discussion: Analyze and critique film by practicing “sandwich” method.

 

Saturday, February 21 – Topic: Begin peer feedback of screenplays.

  • Free write (10 min) – Warm-up

  • Discussion: Roundtable evaluation of screenplays.

 

Saturday, February 28 – Topic: Conclude peer feedback of screenplays.

  • Free write (10 min) – Warm-up

  • Discussion: Roundtable evaluation of screenplays.

  • Wrap-up: Course Evaluation/Survey
